Jazz Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs: Resources for the Church Musician
Is there a way to integrate jazz in worship in an organic way that encourages congregational singing? (Answer: yes!). If I don’t know jazz chords, can I still lead my community in a jazz hymn arrangement (Answer: yes!). Where can I find fully notated piano parts for congregational jazz pieces (Answer: at this workshop!). In this session, Deanna Witkowski will lead participants in singing original jazz hymn arrangements, psalm settings, and service music with and without sheet music. Keyboardists will be provided with piano scores in addition to lead sheets (chords and melody) to use in their respective congregations.
Recharge and Rebuild Your Choir (and You!)
It is all too easy, whether we have been in a particular position for two years or twenty, to focus only on preparing that Sunday’s anthem, remaining content with the preexisting skills and knowledge our volunteer choristers bring to us. But if we do, our choir will never grow, and we will grow stale and perhaps burn out. Whether you’ve never learned how to build your choir’s musicianship and vocal technique in a systematic manner, or could use a refresher, you will leave with a variety of pedagogical tips, tricks, ideas, and perspectives to enliven your rehearsals and, thus, your worship. Suggestions for accessible, quality repertoire will also be shared.
