The Director of Music Ministries leads the rehearsed and unrehearsed expression of the people’s song in worship. We are seeking a partner in ministry who has an imagination for how to support and encouraging singing for both in-person and distance worship services.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Music Ministries:
Schedules, directs, prepares, and leads the choir, praise team, and individuals providing for music leadership at all worship services (Sundays, prayer services, festivals, Holy Week, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, etc.)
Accompanies worship services on organ and piano (Clavinova), playing in a way that supports congregational singing for liturgy, hymns and songs. Provides prelude, postlude, offertory, etc. connected with the theme of the day and in support of the worship service; familiarity with and ability to lead a wide variety of styles of music, including traditional hymnody, world hymns and songs, Christian Contemporary music, etc. as appropriate.
Helps us sing during worship. Assesses what we already know and teaches us new things to sing as well that are in keeping with Lutheran theology and can be sung with authenticity by this assembly.
Invites, equips and prepares volunteer musicians throughout the year.
Collaborates with the pastor in planning worship services including choosing hymns that lift up and illumine the lessons for the day.
Plays at funerals and weddings, depending on availability, for a fee paid by the family directly. The Director of Music Ministries has first right of refusal; if s/he is not available, it will be his/her responsibility to find a suitable replacement.
Directs cantatas and concerts throughout the year.
Manages the budget for music, music supplies, soloists, guest musicians, and substitutes ensuring that expenses do not exceed either the budgeted amount or the available amount.
Along with the pastor and deacon, teaches about worship, liturgy, music, and worship practices.
10. Prepares worship resources (bulletin materials, slides, etc.) in collaboration with office staff in a timely manner.
11. Attends at least one staff meeting per month, is the staff representative on the worship committee (currently meets quarterly), provides a (short) written report to the council monthly and to the congregation annually.
12. Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in church music, organ, piano, or voice or equivalent experience.
Knowledge of Lutheran worship practices, worship music resources including but not limited to Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
Proven ability to teach and inspire amateur musicians of all ages to use their gifts for the glory of God and uplifting of the congregation’s worship life.
Knowledge of copyright law and proven ability to keep records and provide accurate reporting.
Knowledge of (or ability to quickly learn) technology for streaming synchronous and asynchronous worship services and musical offerings within those services.
Knowledge of video and sound systems for worship.
Desire to collaborate in forming and supporting Christian community through music.
Friendly, collaborative, encouraging demeanor. Ability to get to know people.
Productively engages and resolves conflicts. Possess the ability to work well with others.
Excellent organizational skills, written and verbal communication, and followthrough on commitments.
Demonstrate understanding and full support of the mission, values, and beliefs of Advent Lutheran Church, a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
Advent’s worship schedule is decided by the council. Currently, we offer 9:00AM Sunday and 6:30PM Wednesday Evening Prayer via Zoom.
Choir has rehearsed once a week on Wednesdays September to May. Praise team has rehearsed as needed. The church has a set of hand chimes and some hand percussion.
An office at the church is available although office in the home is preferable until Illinois reaches Phase 5 in the COVID recovery plan.
The Director of Music Ministries is under the immediate supervision of the Pastor, and will work in cooperation with the Deacon, and the Worship Committee but is ultimately responsible to the Congregation Council. The Staff Support Committee is available to assist with the resolution of issues pertaining to employment.
Compensation is based on an annual salary and negotiable based on education and experience.
4 weeks (including 4 Sundays) vacation which cannot be taken during holidays or Festival Sundays (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, Reformation Sunday, All Saints, etc.) and should be scheduled in advance.
Membership in one professional organization (eg. ALCM or AGO, etc.)
The Director of Music Ministries will be considered an employee for the purposes of the IRS and will receive a W-2.
The Staff Support Committee will conduct annual performance reviews.
