Director of Music
The Director of Music is responsible for promoting, encouraging, leading, and coordinating the music ministry of Grace Lutheran Church, to the glory of God.
A. Bachelor’s Degree in church music or music education or equivalent training and experience in the field of music.
B. Ability to work well with people of all ages and musical abilities.
C. Good organizational skills and the ability to recruit new people and develop new groups (especially instrumental groups)
D. Proficiency as an organist, pianist, choir director, and conductor (especially of handbells and chimes).
E. Administrative ability (to oversee the Music at Grace concert series with at least one choral program from the choir(s) of Grace Lutheran Church).
F. Strong Lutheran theological understanding/commitment; able to articulate a theology of worship that demonstrates a solid grasp of Lutheran worship.
G. Provide an example of Christian faith and faithful leadership within the ministry staff of the congregation.
A. Plan the music ministry of Grace Lutheran Church in consultation with Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor, church staff and Worship Committee.
B. Coordinate the entire music program – encompassing choir, bells, chimes, youth choir(s), a concert series, and special events and supervise all groups.
C. Promote the music series and the various music groups to the wider community.
D. Administer the music budget and oversee the tuning and repairs of the instruments of the Church (two pipe organs, two grand pianos, a clavinova, bells, chimes, and several upright pianos).
E. Serve as organist, choir director (from the console or keyboard), and coordinate other groups at both Sunday services (8:15 & 10:45 am), for the regular Thursday morning service (11 a,m), for the festival services of Christmas and Easter, and for the Advent and Lenten mid-week services.
F. Recruit choir members, bell and chime players, instrumentalists, and others for the Sunday services, festival services, mid-week services, and special events.
G. Provide music for church weddings and funerals (additional compensation provided by the families involved according to church guidelines).
H. Oversee the music library of the congregation and order music as needed for the liturgical year and special musical events.
I. Attend weekly staff meetings (currently Mondays at Noon).
J. And other duties as negotiated and agreed.
POTENTIAL ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Review and evaluate existing musical program; survey need, desire, and ability to expand the program; plan and supervise changes and expansion.
B. Connect the Church to local and regional organizations and resources (including but not limited to the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, the American Guild of Organists, and others).ADDITIONAL NOTES ABOUT THE CONGREGATION:
Grace Lutheran Church was begun in 1959 and has grown to a membership of some 500 adults and 200 children. The congregation has a main sanctuary that seats some 375 with moveable space for choir, bells, and instrumentalists. The main pipe organ is a 3 manual, 65 rank Casavant/Schantz instrument installed in 2002 and the chapel pipe organ is an 11 rank Moller installed 2014. There is a Baldwin grand piano in the main sanctuary and a Weber grand in the chapel. The Clarksville community is 35 minutes from Nashville and is a growing city with a robust industrial base and a longtime US Army post (Ft. Campbell) on its Northwest border. The Senior Pastor has been here since 1992, the Associate Pastor here since 2015, and a part-time Director of Christian Education since 1997. The staff also includes three administrative staff and a preschool staff (preschool enrollment of 100).

4) Final applicants will be asked to interview on site and to play an audition service in June of 2019. Travel and expenses will be reimbursed by the congregation.
Position becomes available June 1, 2019, with the expectation to have the position filled on or about July 1, 2019. Current Cantor and Director of Music is retiring after 22 years with the congregation.
