Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Port Angeles, WA

Position Announcement: Director of Music

HOLY TRINITY’S MISSION STATEMENT: Called by God’s grace to share the Good News, we are the hands of Christ: opened in love, joined in worship, offered in service, reaching for justice.

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), a Reconciling in Christ congregation located in Port Angeles, Washington, the largest city on the North Olympic Peninsula.  The congregation, founded in 1894, has been a strong faith-based community in a self-sufficient rural region, two and a half hours away from the Puget Sound metropolitan area by car and ferry.  Music has been a central part of the ministry for this congregation and local community throughout its history.

Holy Trinity’s sanctuary has the best resonant acoustics on the Olympic Peninsula.  Our Church regularly hosts the resident NW Women’s Chorale, Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra chamber concerts as well as high school recitals, music student competitions, and visiting musical artists of high caliber reputation.  We host the Margaret Graebner Recital Series which has brought internationally known musicians to our sanctuary. We maintain high quality instruments for the ministry.  Our Bond-rebuilt two-manual Balcom & Vaughan pipe organ, with 24 ranks and 30 stops, features copper-flamed pedals.  A superb Steinway “B” seven-foot grand piano is used regularly in worship.  The Church owns four octaves of Malmark handbells.

The Director of Music will collaborate with our pastoral staff to create regular and special worship services, choosing and integrating hymns, anthems, and instrumental music as appropriate to the church season and sermons.  The Director will conduct our adult mixed choir, occasional instrumental groups and foster vibrant children and youth music activities. The Director will lead the congregation in song, encouraging enthusiasm for worship, music formation, and building community.

An applicant for this position will have a Bachelor degree in a music related field; will have professional experience as an organist and pianist in a congregational setting; and will have accomplishments in choral conducting.  The position is for 25 hours per week with generous benefits. Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience. The 2025 salary range is $35,120 to $40,320.

Please address the co-chairs of the search committee with a cover letter of application concerning your interest, training, and experience.  Three to five YouTube hyperlinks should be inserted into your cover letter with a brief explanation.  Please include a resume, three letters of recommendation and a list of personal and professional references.  We welcome any scanned materials that support your application.  First application review is December 5, 2024.  The position remains open until filled.  Electronic submissions are advised.
