Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
West Allis, Wisconsin
Music Director – Job Description
Holy Trinity Lutheran is a mid-size congregation of the Greater Milwaukee Synod of the ELCA
(Evangelical Lutheran Church in America), located in the beautiful City of West Allis. Holy Trinity has a
long history as a vibrant congregation of generous givers and faithful members who also seek to reach
out to the local community. Holy Trinity holds worship in a beautiful sanctuary with a grand piano and
organ in the rear of the church and space for the worship team in the front. Our mission is to help others
fully experience and freely share God’s grace.
Holy Trinity is seeking a part-time musician/vocalist to work with our volunteer Worship Team to lead
the music for our worship service(s). In this role, the person will be expected to lead a music ministry
that enriches the faith life of our congregation through both contemporary and traditional worship
music.
Responsibilities:
1. Offer a blend of high quality contemporary and traditional music for Sunday morning and special
worship services through ongoing planning, coordination, and presentation.
2. Serve as the primary musician for all worship services and programs. When not personally
available, coordinate guest musicians/singers.
3. Recruit and support a strong Worship Team of vocalists and instrumentalists.
4. Schedule members of the Worship Team for the best mix of vocal and instrumental gifts to
cover the musical needs of the worship service(s) throughout the year.
5. Coordinate rehearsals and lead the volunteer Worship Team members through learning new
songs, practicing for best performance quality, and providing musical guidance to what are often
volunteers without formal musical training.
6. Teach new and less familiar songs to the worship team and to the congregation in ways that are
engaging and inviting.
7. Manage paid musicians’ scheduling, payment (within budget), and rehearsals for special services
and events.
8. Research new songs to add to current repertoire. Work with Pastor to provide the music and
songs that inspire and speak to the congregation, with a focus on a welcoming, engaging
experience to visitors and new member growth.
9. Plan and coordinate the musical aspects of weekly and special service services in collaboration
with the Pastor, choir and lay worship and music teams.
10. Maintain professional musical competency through practice, participation in music workshops,
seminars, or other educational opportunities.
11. Attend staff meetings as called for and/or work with the Worship Committee or other
congregational teams for long-term, short-term, and event planning.
12. Determine and submit annual budget requirements for the music program. Administer
expenditures within the approved budget.
13. Maintain the music library for contemporary and traditional music (hard copy, electronic
through software/licenses with related website, etc.) Supervise the maintenance of all
instruments related to worship.
14. Coordinate with the sound consultant and volunteers for best use of microphones and sound
system.
15. Participate with the church staff, Pastor, and other local congregation- or synod-level leaders in
facilitating goals and assuming tasks as mutually agreed upon with the Pastor.
16. Provide music (for additional compensation per current church policies) for weddings and
funerals, or assist in finding musicians or substitutes.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Demonstrated vocal and keyboard skills, with a working knowledge of other instruments
required. Will require hearing/seeing past and live demonstration for evaluation of talent and
fit.
2. Personality that demonstrates warmth, invitation, inclusion, encouragement, and excitement
for loving God and living out a Christian life of service.
3. In coordination with the Pastor, help to coordinate the flow of worship with verbal introductions
and direction.
4. Degree in music or equivalent area, or relevant music education, or equivalent degree helpful
but not required.
5. Familiarity with Lutheran theology, liturgical practice, and use of a range of musical styles in
worship helpful.
6. Interpersonal skills to work well with Pastor, other staff members and congregational leaders,
and engage people of all ages and skill levels in the music ministry required.
7. Ability to reliably meet the hours and time requirements of the position required: Sunday
mornings, mid-week practices (to be determined with availability of Worship Team members
and choir, but generally a set night of week), any called-for staff meetings or other church
obligations that Music Director is involved in. The hours of the position may fluctuate during
certain times of the year (such as Lent/Easter/Christmas). Holy Trinity expects the role to
require approximately 8 – 12 hours/week.
