Reports to: Pastor

Salary: Commensurate with experience

This position supports the Messiah Lutheran Church mission by leading our congregation’s music through worship that is inspiring, participatory, and celebrates our Lutheran tradition.  Since the ministries of Messiah vary seasonally the Minister of Music shall adapt the worship service and special music to the worshipers who are present.

EXPECTATIONS:

Provide music as appropriate:

·       Apply knowledge and experience of pipe organ, piano and other instruments to accompany Sunday morning and other special services

·       Provide music for all additional services throughout the year

·       Develop and lead vocal groups and soloists to enhance the worship experience

·       Coordinate special music and recognition of Kids Connection

·       Provide music for funerals (additional compensation)

Appreciate Lutheran Liturgy and Music Heritage:

·       Demonstrate the ability to lead the congregation musically through the Lutheran liturgy

·       Select hymns and choral anthems appropriate to the Church Year along with the Pastor

·       Educate the congregation to build its knowledge of liturgy and expand its hymn repertoire

·       Be proficient in Lutheran Theology as expressed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and able to work within this theological framework and with the resources developed along with ecumenical partners

 

 

Direct Music Contributions:

·       Lead and direct at least one vocal choir with a weekly rehearsal

·       Encourage and support ensembles to provide special music

·       Encourage and support the Bell Choir and coordinate with its director to have it provide music in support of worship

·       Step in to direct the Bell Choir in the prolonged vacancy of this position (additional salary to be provided)

Participate in Planning of Worship:

·       Take an active leadership role in the Hymn Selection Committee

·       Meet weekly with the Pastor to review and plan worship

·       Provide timely hymn selections for the service bulletins

·       Meet with the church council monthly to provide input and reporting on congregation life and ministry

EVALUATION PROCESS

Perform a self-evaluation and participate in one-on-one discussion with the Pastor twice annually to provide the basis for improvement and the need for addition development
