Description

Recent years have seen increasing interest in congregational music from around the world, along with the inclusion of this global hymnody in denominational hymnals. Unfortunately, stylistic practices and characteristics often get lost in the process of notating this repertoire for Euro-American songbooks. Drawing on my experience of teaching a college-level World Music class, this webinar will give an overview of general characteristics of selected musics of the world, including Native American, West African, South African, Chinese, and Latin American. We will then consider specific songs that have appeared in recent hymnals, exploring how to retain authentic stylistic practices while simultaneously facilitating participation by congregations of Euro-American background.
